Why are child-safe blinds so important?

Every parent knows how many worries we go through when raising our children, so it's obvious that you want to make sure that they are kept from any harm or safety risks. According to The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, there have been at least 33 toddler deaths connected to blind cords since 2001. This is a scary statistic and can be extremely worrying for parents trying to make their homes risk-free for their child. These accidents have occurred in instances where children have been left with unsafe blinds, often getting tangled in hidden loops or operating cords.

As a responsible supplier of window blinds we are committed to raising awareness about child-safe blinds and helping families identify unsafe blinds. Window blind cords and chains must be kept out of reach of babies and young children and there are many solutions to reduce the safety risk posed by blinds in your home.

3 top tips for keeping children safe from blinds

  1. Examine every blind in your home and in particular, blinds in your children's bedrooms. If any blinds have a looped control chain or cord, then be sure to install a child-safety device or remove these from your home.
  2. Ensure that all operating cords and chains cannot be reached by children. When buying new blinds, always look at options that do not contain cords, has concealed cords or has an in-built safety device.
  3. Move cots, beds and any other children's furniture/toys away from windows and blinds. Children LOVE to climb, so please make sure you aren't encouraging your child to get close to your blinds.
